How to make cold brew coffee at home

As the weather begins to warm up and summer quickly approaching, we will soon begin to order our favorite coffee drinks iced or start drinking cold brew.

Cold brew is a slow extraction process in which coarsely ground coffee is steeped in water for over several hours and produces a smooth less acidic concentrate of cold coffee. This brewing method provides a very refreshing cup which can be enjoyed by itself or with your preferred sweetener. We recommend using our Ethiopian Jaguar bag in your cold brew to bring out the fruity, sweet, and complex flavors.

What you will need.

Fresh ground coffee (coarse grind)

Scale to weigh coffee

Purified Drinking water

A pitcher or something to steep make your cold brew in.

Filter for filtering out coffee grounds

Directions.

1.       First you will grind your whole bean coffee into a coarse grind similar to a French press grind and a little more coarse than you would for traditional drip

2.       Next you want to weigh out your coffee based on the amount of cold brew you would like to brew

a.       Remember you can always dilute the cold brew if it is too strong

b.       A good rule is to use 1 pound of coffee per 1 gallon of water

3.       Next you can fill your filter with the ground coffee. A great tool is using the Alto Cold Brew home brew kit. This kit comes with a pitcher and great quality cold brew filters. If you do not have bag style filters you can add the coffee to your French press, or straight to the recipient that you are brewing with.

4.       Add enough water to soak all the coffee, stir it around and allow the coffee to rest in the water for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Close the bag to your filter then add the rest of the water to your batch. If you are not using a bag filter you will just add the water to the rest of your batch.

5.       Place your container in the refrigerator for about 12-24 hours depending on the flavor you are going for. You can always taste the cold brew with a spoon during this process to find the right timing.

6.       When your cold brew tastes just the way you like it you will now remove the coffee from the batch. If you have a bag style filter you can just pull the bag out of the batch. Otherwise, you can filter out the grounds using a fine strainer or a traditional coffee filter as you pour the coffee into your pitcher.

7.       Enjoy! We began our journey into specialty coffee by brewing our cold brew and hope this brings out your creativity in the brew.
